Cattle Colonies: Dino Melaye Fires Back At Gov Bello, Says No Land For Cattle In Kogi West | CNR

Senator Dino Melaye and Governor Yahaya Bello

The declaration by Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello that the State is ready for establishment of the proposed cattle colonies to in to curtail the recurring clashes between herdsmen and farmers which have claimed hundreds of lives has met stiff resistance as the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has fired back at the Governor, saying that the land of Kogi West people "cannot be used for cattle colonies".

Senator Melaye, APC Kogi West said that he was not surprised that the Governor will be the first to rush to the federal government to kick-start the pilot scheme in Kogi State because money is involved.

The federal government had in the wake of fresh attacks earlier this month by Fulani herdsmen in communities in Benue, Southern Kaduna and Taraba states proposed the establishment of cattle colonies in all states of the federation to prevent further clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the future.

The proposal has however, been rejected by some state governors with Abia and Taraba states being the firsts to announce that the proposed cattle colonies cannot be established in their states.

Many other states in Nigeria's southern region are expected to toe the path of Abia and Taraba states apparently due to the casualties their citizens have suffered in the hands of armed Fulani herdsmen.

Kogi state governor was the first state to announce that it is ready to test-run the proposed cattle colonies in the state.

But people of Kogi West through a statement signed by  the Senator representing the District in the federal Senate, Dino Melaye, rejected the proposed cattle colonies, saying that there is no land for cattle colonies in the area.

"The governor's latest shenanigans is not surprising in the sense that money is involved. The Federal Government will definitely make funds available go Bello to kick-start the pilot scheme in Kogi State.

"Therefore as a true representative of the people of Kogi West senatorial zone and on behalf of my constituents, we warn in strong terms that our soil, land, water and air cannot be used for cattle colonies.
