N-Power Supervisors Storm LG Headquarters, Begins Clinical Supervision of Volunteers

Mr. Afolabi Imoukhuede

Federal Government has dispatched officials of its youth empowerment scheme, N-Power, to local government areas across the country to commence immediate visit and supervision of N-Power beneficiaries at their various Places of Primary Assignment.

The move is believed to be part of efforts currently being made to identify and expose volunteers who were already employed elsewhere and others who does not go to work at the Places of Primary Assignments.

Some volunteers who spoke to CNR Nigeria correspondent said the N-Power supervisors who are mostly employees of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) arrived different Local Government Areas without any prior announcement.

An N-Teach volunteer in Onitsha South local government of Anambra state who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that some workers in the local government informed them of the development.

"N-Power official have arrived in different local government areas as of Monday this week. I can tell you authoritatively. They arrived our local government unannounced. In fact they have started visiting schools, primary health centres and agricultural extension workers offices to supervise beneficiaries.

I think the reason why N-Power did not announce their coming is to take volunteers unawares. Truth is that the move is already yielding results. Many volunteers are not going to work. Especially those of the second batch".

Another volunteer at Ozubulu areas of Anambra state who gave her name simply as Ifeoma told our correspondent that she was aware of the presence of the newly deployed N-Power supervisors in the local government.

"I was reliably informed about their arrival. I am a 2016 volunteer and I have been very active in my PPA. So, there's no cause for alarm. Some of my colleagues stopped coming to work because the programme is about to end. They are in for a big trouble now. We are eagerly waiting for our turn. The have gone to some schools already.

Asked whether she would inform her colleagues about the development, Ifeoma said it depends on her relationship with the particular colleague.

In Oru East local government area of Imo state, our correspondent gathered that the officials are on ground but that not many are aware of their presence.

An official in the local government told CNR Nigeria correspondent that there are many complaints coming from school principals and headteachers about volunteers who are yet resume duties in their schools since they were posted to work there.

"The new set of volunteers we posted to schools are not ready to do the job except for very few of them. School principals and headteachers have been coming to us with complaints about people that were posted to their schools but are yet to show up. We understand that they have been paid for the months of August and September. Yet they refuse to resume duties".

The latest move by N-Power to identify and expose volunteers who are already employed and nonworking volunteers is part effort by the scheme to ensure that only those are working full time are entitled to the monthly stipend.
