It's Official! At Last, Senate Confirms Members Receive Separate N 13.5 Million 'Running Cost' Monthly | CNR


The Senate has formerly confirmed that its members receive N 13.5 Million for running cost apart from their traditional monthly salaries and allowances.

Senator Shehu Sani had recently confirmed the amount which was hitherto kept from the public.

The money is neither captured nor approved by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). The amount which Mr. Sani says totals about N 750,000 monthly, is separate from their monthly allowances approved by the RMAFC.

Reacting to the claim, Senate spokesman, Aliyu Abdullahi said the revelation by Mr. Sani that senators receive N 13.5 million monthly as "running cost" is nothing new.

Mr. Abdullahi, in the statement Sunday said that every details of what Sani said were already captured in various line items and expenditure head of the budget of the National Assembly which has been made public.

The Senate spokesman, however, said that "if people had looked critically into the budget of the National Assembly which has since been made public, they would have seen that various line items like travelling, medicals, consultancy and the rest were captured in the budget and they were the funds divided for each senator's use".

While revealing that Mr. Sani's colleagues were not happy with his action, Mr. Abdullahi said "almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices and that cannot be said to be part of their salaries", the Senate spokesperson pointed out.
