I Didn't Say Social Media Practitioners, Users are Criminals - IGP

Ibrahim Idris, IG of Police
The Nigeria Police Force on Monday denies media reports that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris referred to social media practitioners and users as criminals.

The IGP had during a chat with newsmen on the #ENDSARS campaign at a function recently said the social media is a technology available to those that are criminally minded.

When asked to react to the clamour for the end of SARS, he said:

"You have to be careful about this clamoring. Social media is a technology available to those that are criminally minded and we have to be careful the way we respond to some of this clamoring like you are saying”.

But a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Moshood  on Monday said the police chief was rather misquoted.

"The Nigeria Police Force wishes to categorically state that IGP did not mean that “Social Media is a technology available to those that are criminal minded” but that social media can also be used by criminal minded persons and people should be wary and careful of this.

"The Force hereby enjoins all social media practitioners and users to disregard and discountenance the story

"The Nigeria Police Force is social media friendly and will continue to partner with Social Media practitioners and Users in ensuring adequate protection of Life and Property across the Country", the statement read.
