APC is Unpopular in South-East - Says Okorocha | CNR

Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha on Tuesday admitted that his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, was not popular among his people of the South-East region of Nigeria.

The Governor also announced plan to conduct local government election in the state in June.

The planned local government election is coming after many botched promises to conduct the election since he was elected governor in 2011.

He has blamed his inability to organise LG poll in the state on 'encumbrances of the Law', and urged the state lawmakers to 'perfect the local government laws' so election can hold in June.

Mr. Okorocha made the disclosure at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, on arrival from a short trip overseas.

According to Mr. Okorocha, APC is weak in the South-East.

He restated his endorsement of President Mohammadu Buhari to contest the 2019 presidential poll and his Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, who is also his son-in-law to contest the governorship poll in Imo state.

"Let those criticising these endorsements present their own aspirants or candidates if they think or feel that what they have is better than what we have endorsed so that the people can look at the 'whole of them' and make their choice. You don't criticise an action (if) you do not have a better option", Okorocha said.

He promised to provide a level playing ground for governorship aspirants of the APC in the state despite the involvement of his son-in-law, as one of the aspirants.

Mr. Okorocha has severally come under heavy criticism following his endorsement of his Chief of Staff, who also double as his son-in-law to succeed him at government house in 2019.
