Tension as N-Power Volunteers Demand Resignation of Minister

There is uneasy calm in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management & Social Development as beneficiaries of the federal government graduate empowerment scheme, N-Power have launched a massive protest, demanding the resignation of the minister.

The minister, Sadiya Farouq, has been a subject of criticism ever since she assumed office as head of the newly created ministry in late 2019 as she struggle to find her feet and keep up with responsibilities.

In November 2019, she was heavily criticized after owing N-Power beneficiaries for two consecutive months which was later paid but again in February 2020, she once again came under fire for delaying volunteers' stipends which led Nigeria's members of House of Representatives to invite her for questioning.

But the minister offers no tangible reasons for delaying the stipends on each occasion.

The current call for her resignation by the volunteers is an offshoot of yet another delay of the volunteers stipend for the month March ended amidst lockdown of business and economic activities across Nigeria as part of government efforts to curtail the spread of the new Coronavirus.

Nigeria government had ordered citizens to stay indoors for the coming weeks amidst growing concerns that hunger may hamper compliance to the order, as government fail to provide palliative measures to ease the effects of the stay at home on the masses.

The volunteers are saying that refusal to pay them has worsen the difficulties they now face as the stay at home orders lasts.

One of the volunteers, Justin Tsegba who appears to be leading the protest for the resignation of the minister says the minister has proven beyond reasonable doubt that she was not capable of handling the job hence the need for her to resign.

"Without mincing words or being economical with truth, every right thinking person know that Sadiya Farouq, the minister of Humanitarian Affairs was unprepared for the task of managing a govt ministry.

From the day she was appointed to this moment, she has yet to come to terms with the reality of her new position. The reason is not farfetched. She is incompetent, lack capacity and grasp of the rudiments of her new job. Hence she spend each moment chasing shadow and hallucinating, running from pillar to pole with NO result.

It is therefore incumbent on her to relieve herself of the position and end suffering of Nigerians whose job fall under her ministry.

Every N-Power beneficiary must rise to the challenge to call on this lady to resign now. Her continued stay is a threat to the survival of many N-Power volunteers and their families who depend on their monthly stipend for survival", Mr Tsegba wrote in protest call that is currently trending on social media.

He is using the #SadiyaFarouqResignNow to demand immediate resignation of the minister and volunteers have voluntarily joined the call, putting aside their differences to fight what they believe was a common enemy.

Neither Ms Farouq nor the ministry has reacted to the development as of the time of filling this report.
